“I am so f……ing sick of getting emails from the teacher. I am at a loss for what I am supposed to do!”
We have heard this at least 100 times this year. We hear you and we feel your pain. We, too, are sick of emails, homework, tears, masks, tryouts, registrations, deadlines, final exams, tuition bills, powerschool, schoology, missed opportunities, MCAS, worrying about the next school year…..we could go on and on about what we are sick of. We were saying this in December 2020…convinced 2021 would be better! I mean there is no way we would still be feeling like this after the year that 2020 brought us, right? And yet here we are, June 2021, still feeling like this is a never ending cycle and we have to brace ourselves for what’s next. What will it be? A missing essay? A failed test?
We are more than ready for summer 2021. School will be done, masks will be done if that works for you, no more homework, no more books….well you know how that song goes. We can’t wait for the freedom and fun that summer brings. We have decided to give 90% of our energy to making the best of this season and 10% of our energy to improving one area of our lives. This small effort is going to feel really good–not going crazy with every self improvement fad or self help empowerment program–just one area that we can focus on. Setting a small manageable goal that only takes a small portion of our time and effort to reach is going to bring great rewards.
My goal? I’m going to dedicate my summer to figuring out smooth mornings for the fall. I’m working out the details of my plan, but I know it will involve figuring out how each of my 3 children sleep, wake up and what they need in the morning so we can minimize the last minute rush out the door….and the yelling and tears (sometimes theirs, sometimes mine). We have had many good mornings this school year, but it definitely needs some tweaking. We need some Plan As, Plan Bs and probably some Plan Cs. We have a pretty good system at home, but it’s not where I would like it to be because 1 little thing, like a missing mask, can throw everyone off. Each of the 3 kids has a different personality and different needs in the morning so what I am dedicating 10% of my summer to is figuring out what will make it smoother for each of them. Stay tuned and I will let you know how it goes come September!
What are you going to choose? It could be anything from reading a book, taking more walks, to finding one on one time with each of your children. Make it happen! Remember we are only putting 10% of our time and energy into this. We would love to hear from you so post a comment here!
